Elk Bugle Corp in the Smokies The elk in Cataloochee section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are in full rut (mating season). The males are bugling, struting and herding their harem. Right now, it's a little like a soap opera as males fight it out for the women. At this writing, elk #67, shown above, is dominant. The rut will continue for another couple of weeks. I am one of about 75 Elk Bugle Corp volunteers. We greet visitors, educate them on the elk reintroduction, tell them about the history of the park but our most important job is keeping people at least 50 yards away from the elk. No matter what the elk do, they have the right of way. Danny Barnett Branch Boardwalk
This trail issue on the Boardwalk is reported and we may have to plan other hikes for 1/2 day Sunday, October 25 and Wednesday, November 11. Stay tuned to e-News and the on-line hike schedule for updates.
