SUMMARY:Introduction to GMRS Radio
DESCRIPTION:You are in the woods out of cell range\, someone in your party is hurt\, and you need assistance ASAP. What if you had a radio that would let you communicate with the outside world to ask for help? \n\n\nOr this: you are part of a crew working on different sections of trail well out of voice range. What if you need to communicate a need or a question to the other elements of the crew?\n\nOr this (to which we can all relate!): a natural disaster hits our area\, and cell towers are down – how can you reach someone to report a need or offer your help?  (In the aftermath of Helene\, GMRS radio operators were a vital part of the coordination of SAR and relief efforts.)\n\nGeneral Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radios can be a valuable resource. These are not long-range “HAM” amateur radio units\, which are typically more costly and require passing an FCC examination. GMRS radios\, on the other hand\, have more modest ranges (but much greater than with department store “walkie-talkies”). Best of all\, licensed GMRS users can utilize high-power base stations\, known as “repeaters”\, that amplify the signal from hand-held radios such that their range is multiplied many times over. The radios are typically inexpensive\, and while an FCC license is needed\, it is only $35\, is good for 10 years\, and covers all members of your immediate family.  This license is obtained quickly via an online portal\, and no test is required.\n\nCome learn from several experienced operators about the capabilities and limitations of GMRS radio\, and its utility to CMC hike leaders\, trail maintainers\, SAR crews\, and recreational hikers.\n\nClick here to register\n\nClass size limited to 12\n\nThis class brought to you by the CMC Search and Rescue Crew.
