About the Hike

Hike Description

Contact hike leader via email for reservation. Limit of 15 hikers. This is a moderate hike to two tall, side-by-side, waterfalls in Pisgah National Forest. If the first bridge is complete, we'll start at the Avery Creek trailhead and follow along beautiful Avery Creek with its waterfalls to the Buckhorn Gap Trail. Otherwise we'll start at the Buckhorn Gap trailhead. We?ll hike to the Twin Falls Bypass to view the two waterfalls. From there we'll continue higher up the Buckhorn Gap Trail and work our way over to the Clawhammer Cove Trail. On the way down we'll stop and look at Clawhammer Cove Falls and then return to the Avery Creek trailhead. Topos: Pisgah Forest

Scout Report

On my way to the trailhead, I saw that the Avery Creek trail was closed due to bridge construction. Adding a detour to the original trip would have added an extra mile to the original route, and with hot and humid/rainy weather seeming likely on the hike day, I decided to modify the hike route. The new route will be a little shorter at around 4.5 miles and 400 feet ascent. On a mostly cloudy warm day I headed out the Buckhorn Gap trail to the Twin Falls trail. On the way it sprinkled a little and I could hear rapid thunder somewhere up near the Blue Ridge parkway. The storm stayed away and I never felt more than a light sprinkle the whole day. Most of the short Twin Falls trail is on the other side of the creek, requiring reasonable rock hops to cross. On the Buckhorn trail, all of the missing bridges have been replaced. The trail crew did a wonderful job rehabilitating and updating this trail. As always, the falls were spectacular and I spent some time relaxing in their beauty. I continued on the Twin Falls trail back to Buckhorn gap and started back to the trailhead. On the way I stopped at the Avery Creek trail and hiked into Avery Creek falls. After a few pictures, I returned back to Buckhorn Gap Tr. And continued back to the trailhead.
