About the Hike

Hike Description

Contact leader by email for reservation. Form carpools and meet leader at the second meeting place. With ongoing construction at the Fish Hatchery, parking can be limited, so fewer cars is better. This hike features two of the spectacular bare rock faces in the Pisgah National Forest, with great views from both. Starting at the Fish Hatchery, we'll have our major climb up to Cat Gap and then on to Cedar Rock to enjoy the view during lunch. We'll return via John Rock. Topos: Shining Rock

Scout Report

We began the scout in a counter-clockwise fashion on the Cat Gap Loop Trail, hiking steadily up to the Art Loeb Trail, continuing up the ALT to the Cedar Rock trail. Overall a moderately steep climb and a good cardio workout. At the top we had good views. We then proceeded down to the intersection with the Cat Gap and back to our cars, skipping the section up to John Rock, which will be done on the hike. On hike day the distance should be about 8 miles. All the trails are in excellent shape, even the Cedar Rock Trail.
