Hike Description

Contact the hike leaders for reservation. This group trail run will offer 2 options, a shorter loop of 4.4 miles with 750-ft. ascent and a longer loop of 8.8 miles with 1,250-ft. ascent. Both groups will begin promptly from the Black Balsam parking lot at the end of FS 816 at 10:00am. We will start on the Ivestor Gap Trail, then follow the Art Loeb Trail (ALT), up and over Tennent Mountain and to the summit of Black Balsam Knob. The shorter loop will return to the trailhead via the 0.4 mile Art Loeb Spur Trail. For those wanting more of a challenge, the longer loop will continue on the ALT and the MST, until it connects with the Little Sam Trail. From the Little Sam Trail, we will make a left onto Flat Laurel Creek, and then a right onto the Sam Knob Trail until it leads back to the parking area. Participants are assumed to have prior trail running experience. Runners should be prepared with proper hydration, layering, and footwear with good traction.Topos: Shining Rock
