About the Hike
Hike Description
Contact the leader via email for reservation. This hike is a variation of 737. The Noland Divide Trail begins as a steady climb along the southern boundary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As we climb, we will experience expansive views of the southern Smoky Mountains. There is a short spur trail to the Lonesome Pine Overlook. The overlook offers commanding views of the Nantahala Mountains across the Tuckasegee River Valley, with Bryson City almost directly below. This is our lunch spot, and we will take the same trail back to our cars. NOTE: A parking pass is required for each vehicle in the GSMNP. Scout Report
A steady climb made the ascent easier. At 2 mi the trail crosses a tributary of Juney Whank Branch before reaching the knife edge of Beaugard Ridge which is 100 yds long. Views include Mt Kephart, Waterrock Knob, Cheoah Bald, Cowee Mtn and downtown Bryson City. A patch of wild strawberry and bear huckleberry complement chestnut stump sprouts, sourwood and pines. A fence lizard greeted me at the overlook's lone tree (not a pine), and a timber rattlesnake lay motionless basking on the ridge. A chipmunk gave me a high pitched call.
