Opinion: Some trails around here are still a huge mess — making the woods a fire danger

The Extra Milers, the Wilderness Crew, and anyone from CMC willing and able to help, are invited to do a long and strenuous day on the Art Loeb up from Camp Daniel Boone to the Narrows, cutting and trimming overgrowth on the way. This section is in Wilderness so no mechanized tools are allowed.
We highly recommend that only hikers and runners who feel very comfortable hiking 2 miles per hour to cover 13 miles with over 3000ft of elevation gain sign up for this work day. Are you training for Hellbender or Seven Sisters? This work day is for you. With the amount of distance we need to cover, we will only have an hour or two, at best, to try to clear the remaining section of the Narrows that has not yet been touched by our crew. It will be a long day. No prior trail maintenance experience is necessary.
CMC–SAR in Burke County “God’s Country”: When the Terrain Is the Test

Burke County doesn’t allow a casual training day. It demands one. In a recent full- scale SAR exercise in “God’s Country,” CMC–SAR members—integrated into Haywood County SAR—joined a multi-agency response scenario where the terrain itself was a primary training objective.

Volunteer Opportunities
The Club is currently seeking both section maintainers and members for our weekly trail crews.
Section Maintainers “adopt” a portion of trail and are responsible for tasks such as quarterly walk-throughs, routine maintenance (including tread work, trimming, and clearing water diversions), and reporting any downed trees or other trail obstructions.
Weekly crew members join scheduled group outings to help with a variety of trail maintenance projects. It’s a great way to learn trail skills, meet other volunteers, and make a meaningful impact.
