From your Editor

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm grateful that I live so close to the Smokies and the Blue Ridge Parkway. I'm grateful that in the Southern Appalachians, we can hike comfortably all year round without crampons, snow shoes and ice axes. And I'm grateful that I belong to an active, involved hiking club. What are you grateful for? Danny

What's Happening In the Next Two Weeks

Four CMC Pilgrims at Diamond Brand Outdoors on Monday Nov. 23

The four CMC pilgrims ( Jay Bretz, Carroll Koepplinger, Tom Sanders, and Don Walton) will be giving a slide show on their most recent trek from Geneva, Switzerland to LePuy France, at Diamond Brand in Arden, 7:00, Monday Nov. 23.

All of them agree that this is the most beautiful of the three sections they have done. Come and see why. Also bring along any questions you may have about the Camino de Santiago, the historical pilgrimage route that begins in several European countries and ends in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Calendar for 2010

The CMC calendar for 2010 has been set. We have dates for the CMC Council meetings, open to all members, and the CMC Quarterly work days. Check it out and put those dates on your personal calendar..

Other Important News

Elk Poaching in Cataloochee Valley

On Friday, Nov. 13, a Graham County man shot and killed Elk #21 in the Cataloochee Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The elk, shown on the left, is Elk #21

He had brought a gun in the park (still illegal) and shot a protected animal. There's no hunting in the national parks and in addition, the elk are protected no matter where they go.

As Bob Miller, the Public Affairs officer for the park said, "he didn't get the carcass".

As you can imagine, the Elk Bugle Corp volunteers are all aghast. The Bugle Corp season was over Nov. 1 but communications among us continues. Danny

Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition

This competition provides both amateur and professional photographers the opportunity to showcase their interpretation of the unique character, people, places, and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachians. The deadline is January 29, 2010. Check out all the details.

Conservation Matters

Meet the Conservation Trust for North Carolina - www.ctnc.org.

CTNC helps safeguard historic trail, scenic backdrops for many BRP hikes New sections of a centuries-old trail are being preserved forever thanks to an organization many hikers have never heard of.

In fact, the Conservation Trust for North Carolina and 24 local land trusts across the state have protected many natural areas that hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts now enjoy. See the whole story.
