Wilderness First Aid Course Offered

This is a great hands-on training course that will provide the participant with the necessary skills and tools to make difficult medical decisions in remote settings.

If you are interested in attending, you will need to complete an application packet which can be obtained by contacting Nan Needs at Nanspath@aol.com or go to www.nols.edu/wmi to Wilderness First Aid, and check out info for Course Outline, and Schedule /Application at bottom of page.  You can download the application packet.  Checks need to be made out to “Carolina Mountain Club”.  Completed applications need to be mailed to Nan Needs, address on application packet, by November 1, 2010.

Please contact Nan if you have questions.

Contact Jim Spicer at js15@earthlink.net.  He has a spam blocker but will get your message if you use the subject above.

Three CMC Pilgrims at Diamond Brand Outdoors on Tuesday Nov. 16

The three CMC pilgrims (Jay Bretz, Carroll Koepplinger and Don Walton) will be giving a slide show on their most recent trek through Switzerland from Rorschach (German border) to Geneva, at Diamond Brand in Arden, 6:00, Tuesday Nov. 16.

All of them agree that this is the most profoundly beautiful and rugged of the four sections they have done.

Come and see why. Also bring along any questions you may have about the Camino de Santiago, the historical pilgrimage route that begins in several European countries and ends in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Plan Ahead

The Ramsey Cascade Trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be closed Nov. 2 to Nov. 12.

Maintainers Appreciation Picnic News

The 4th annual Maintainers Appreciation Picnic was hosted again by Jack and Lois Albright in Alexander on Sat. Sept. 18th. Some three dozen GREAT maintainers and their guests enjoyed brats, burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken and barbecue provided by the hosts and a delicious smorgasboard  of guest provided dishes.

This years picnic featured some toe tapping music provided by the Quartet with-no-name, a group of men who enjoy jamming with bass, banjo/ mandolin and two guitars and who have a broad repertoire of music with and emphasis on Bluegrass. Many guest sang along with the more popular tunes and some of the guests couldn't resist the urge to dance to the music.

Horseshoes and other activities were provided but most people opted to just sit in the shade of the tents and chat with their neighbor maintainer. The weather was perfect for the occasion and the views to the Black Mountains some twenty miles off were unobstructed.

Next year's event is already scheduled for the third Sat. of Sept 2011 and the band and guests have all agreed to return. Jack and Lois are hoping for an even more successful turn out so all you maintainers who couldn't make it this year should circle the date for next year. Jack Albright - Photos by Becky Smucker

What is the Appalachian Trail Conservancy working on in the Southern Region?

As an Appalachian Trail (A.T).-maintaining Club, CMC needs to have two-way communication with both Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) Headquarters in Harpers Ferry, WV, and with the ATC’s Southern Regional Office (SORO) in Asheville.

ATC sets policy for A.T. construction and maintenance, supports clubs like CMC in their A.T.-maintaining efforts, and sponsors a number of programs related to the A.T. One of the primary ways in which CMC communicates with ATC is through a Regional Partnership Committee (RPC) composed of representatives of the five Clubs in ATC’s Southern Region, members of the SORO Staff, and a representative from ATC Headquarters. Tim Carrigan and I are CMC’s representatives on the RPC.

Read my report on the RPC’s Oct. 2 meeting. Lenny Bernstein

Interview

Meet Don Walton (a.k.a. Buttons the Clown) byBobbi Powers

There’s nothing like a goofy headline and picture to “hook” a reader. Now that you’re hooked, read on to learn about the several “faces” of Don Walton, a man whose talents run the gamut from past president of CMC to being, yes indeed, a clown.

I recently met with Don at UNCA’s Reuters Center after his class “History of the Chinese Communist Party,” one of four classes Don is enrolled in this semester at NC Center for Creative Retirement.

Letters to the Editor

From Rhona McKenna

I was thinking. Wouldn’t it be nice if more people used Facebook in the club?

A couple of weeks ago I was doing a hike with the club up near Hot Springs and since I live in Weaverville didn’t want to drive all the way to West Gate.  So I posted if anyone wanted to ride with me up there.  I didn’t hear from anyone, but then when I got up there two other people had driven up in separate cars.

One lives about 100 yards from me the other about ½ mile.  It would have been great if we could have gone together.  Just a thought. Rhonda McKenna

S

Slate Rock Creek Trail, considered one of the gems of the Pisgah National Forest, had 7 trees fallen across the trail early summer. Thanks to Pete Peterson's Friday Pisgah crew these were cleared in mid-summer. See the photos taken before and the efforts of the Friday chainsaw gang. Hikers from our region really appreciate the efforts of the trail crew. Ashok. Before and after photos by Ashok Kudva.

Oprah goes camping in Yosemite

If you've ever wanted an excuse to watch Oprah, this might be it.

On Friday October 29 and Monday November 1, Oprah Winfrey will dedicate two shows to her visit to in Yosemite National Park earlier this month.

Park Ranger Shelton Johnson who was featured in Ken Burns National Parks: America's Best Idea invited Oprah to visit the park several years ago. The shows will feature Oprah's visit and activities such as fly fishing and a mule ride. Oprah also questions why there aren’t more visitors of color in national parks. Shelton Johnson has been working on this issue for a long time. Danny
