The 100 Favorite Hikes Challenge (FH100) is based on the popular hiking map 100 Favorite Trails of the Smokies and the Carolina Blue Ridge.

The original map was developed in 1966 by longtime Carolina Mountain Club member Bernard Elias. It remained a favorite among hikers for decades before CMC partnered with Smokies Life (formerly the Great Smoky Mountains Association) to publish a completely updated edition in 2020.

A committee of CMC hikers selected 100 of the region’s finest hikes, and more than 35 CMC hike leaders hiked each route, created GPS tracks, and contributed descriptions for the new map. The result is a collection of hikes ranging from moderate to strenuous, from less than two miles to more than ten miles, featuring mountain vistas, waterfalls, forests, streams, and many of the Southern Appalachians’ most iconic destinations.

The updated map quickly inspired members to create the 100 Favorite Hikes Challenge, giving hikers the opportunity to experience every trail on the map. For longtime hikers, the challenge offers a chance to revisit classic routes. For newcomers, it provides an excellent introduction to the diversity of hiking throughout the Southern Appalachians.

Because every hike is either a loop or an out-and-back route, no vehicle shuttles are required.

While purchasing the map is not required, many participants find it to be a valuable planning resource and a memorable keepsake.

The Challenge

To complete the challenge, hike all 100 trails included on the 2020 edition of 100 Favorite Trails of the Smokies and the Carolina Blue Ridge.

Download the 100 Favorite Trails Challenge spreadsheet to track your progress and submit it when you complete the challenge.

All qualifying hikes must have been completed on or after October 1, 2020, and each trail must include the date it was hiked.

History

The newly published map was well-received and very soon several CMC members suggested  making the 100 Favorite Trails a challenge. For some, these trails are familiar favorites, and  others may find them to be a great introduction to the variety of trails throughout the  mountains. All the trails are loops or in/out hikes, so there are no car shuttles necessary.

It is not necessary to purchase the 100 Favorite Trails of the Smokies and the Carolina Blue  Ridge, however many who do the challenge may want to use the map as a reference and a  keepsake of the challenge. The map is also useful in grouping hikes by area. The map is  available through the GSMA at Visitor Centers in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or online here.

Planning Your Hikes

The challenge map is intended as an overview and does not provide enough detail for navigation. Hikers are encouraged to use additional resources, including:

  • The Carolina Mountain Club Hike Database, which includes many of the challenge hikes along with detailed descriptions and printable topographic maps.
  • National Geographic Trail Maps for Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Pisgah National Forest.
  • Regional trail maps published by Pisgah Map Company.

Liability

  • As always, plan ahead and know your limitations.
  • Check your route and the weather forecast.
  • Select proper equipment and clothing for the area and weather.
  • Carry a map and compass and know how to use them.
  • Always have water to stay hydrated and sufficient food for the duration of the hike.
  • Always tell a responsible person about your hiking plans.
  • Check with the land management agency for closures and conditions before you visit an area to hike.

FAQs

No. The goal is to complete the featured trail. You may extend a hike beyond the mapped route if you choose.

Yes. Some nearby hikes can be completed together. For example, Trails 54 and 55 naturally combine into a single hike, and several hikes in the same area may also be completed during one outing.

Yes. Trail #98, the Grandfather Trail, requires paid admission to Grandfather Mountain State Park. Participants may substitute a comparable hike such as the Daniel Boone Scout Trail, Nuwati Trail, or Flat Rock Trail.

Absolutely. Build up to the more challenging hikes and consider joining a CMC group hike. Many of these routes appear regularly on the club’s hiking schedule.

Many CMC members have hiked these trails numerous times over the years. Because trails evolve and conditions change, the challenge was designed to encourage participants to experience them again beginning with the publication of the 2020 map.
