The Pisgah 400 Challenge (P400) encourages hikers to explore every official trail in the Pisgah Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest. Official trails are those named and numbered by the U.S. Forest Service Pisgah Ranger District.

The Pisgah Map Company map is the recommended resource for completing the challenge. Produced locally in Western North Carolina, it is regularly updated and widely regarded as the most accurate map of the district. National Geographic Map 780: Pisgah Ranger District is also an excellent reference.

Because the Pisgah Ranger District contains an extensive and interconnected trail system, many participants purchase two maps—one to carry on hikes and another to track completed trails.

Challenge Rules

To complete the Pisgah 400 Challenge, participants must:

  • Be a current Carolina Mountain Club member.
  • Hike every official trail shown on the edition of the map that is current on the date of application.
  • Submit a signed P400 Challenge Log with their application.

Hikes completed before joining the challenge may be counted. Since many trails are completed over multiple outings, simply record the date each trail was completed. If you do not remember the exact date, an estimate is acceptable.

Recognition

Completed P400 applications are accepted by email only. Scan or photograph your completed P400 Challenge Log and email it to Kevin O’Shea at p400@carolinamountainclub.org with the subject line “P400 Completion.” Paper applications are not accepted.

Successful participants receive:

  • A P400 patch
  • A certificate of completion
  • Recognition at the Carolina Mountain Club Annual Meeting

Awards can also be mailed upon request.

Please allow 4–6 weeks for review and processing. As a volunteer organization, CMC appreciates your patience.

Participants must be current Carolina Mountain Club members. There is no additional charge for the patch and certificate for current members.
